Figs
On the following day, when they came from Bethany, Jesus was hungry. Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. He said to it, ‘May no one ever eat fruit from you again’. And his disciples heard it. (Mark: 11:12-14)
It would seem that rather than talking about figs, Jesus was talking about other fruit, the fruit that was not being produced by the people of God. So just as he would go on to talk about the destruction of the temple in these days in the lead up to his Passion, so he is talking here about the way in which the unfruitfulness of the people would be overthrown and a new fruitfulness in a new kingdom established – and established in him.
