An escape route

And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it he would not drink it. (Matthew 27: 33-34)

It was to dull the pain, this drink they offered him. But he didn’t want it. Drink, drugs, shopping, gambling, pornography, sex – we can resort to so many things to dull the pain of our lives, to blur our vision of reality and to take us to a place we would rather be than the place that we are. Even in the midst of a horrible reality, Jesus resists what is offered to him. What he is going through is real and he stays with it.
