A new day dawns
When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. They bound him , led him away and handed him over to Pilate the governor. (Matthew 27: 1-2)
It is already morning though Jesus wouldn’t know - it is so dark in the dungeon. But the stone is removed from above him and the ropes come down and he is hauled up. The pain is agonizing. He thinks of the prophet Jeremiah being kept in that dried out well and lifted up on ropes (Jeremiah 38). They had provided for him padding to put under his arms but there was no comfort for Jesus. Instead, as soon as he emerged, he was tied and dragged away to see Pilate the governor as the sun was coming up.
